Adopting Healthy Oral Hygiene Habits

As your child's teeth erupt, be sure to examine them every two weeks, looking for lines and discoloration that may be caused by decay. Remember that sugary foods and liquids can attack a new tooth, so take care that your child brushes after feeding or eating. We recommend brushing four times a day for optimal oral hygiene: after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner, and at bedtime.

Brushing can be fun, and your child should brush as soon as the first tooth arrives. When a baby's tooth erupts, parents should brush the tooth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. For children younger than two, do not use fluoride toothpaste unless advised to do so by your dentist or other healthcare professional. We suggest reviewing proper tooth brushing procedures with your child.

Flossing is also a part of good oral hygiene habits, and your doctor will discuss with you the right time to start flossing. If you notice signs of decay, contact your dentist immediately.

Pediatric Check-ups
Kids check-ups should begin at age one. This begins with establishing healthy habits at an early age. Regular checkups and cleaning can assist to keep teeth and gums clean. By taking your child for regular dental check-ups at a very young age, you will ensure their teeth will develop properly and correct any potential oral health issues before they become serious.

Cleanings
At age three, children should begin a schedule of regular cleanings. Regular cleanings help to remove tartar buildup, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Teeth cleanings are also important for children  to ensure that their teeth are in an overall healthy condition.

X-rays
Dental X-rays are an important diagnostic tool used to identify several issues of the mouth for children, including tooth decay, tumors, cysts and extra teeth. New technologies allow for digital X-rays that can reduce the radiation exposure by more than 50 percent.

When your child needs urgent dental treatment, Dr. Naz and her staff at our office are ready to help. Taking quick action may save the tooth, prevent infections and reduce additional dental treatments.
